Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease the cake pan with softened butter. Line the bottom with parchment paper and wash the navel oranges well.

Place the whole oranges in the saucepan, cover with water, and bring to a gentle simmer. Cover and cook for 50 to 60 minutes, until the oranges are very soft.
