Servings: 4 · Prep: 10 min · Cook: 20 min · Total: 30 min
Ingredients
- 8 slices White sandwich bread
- 4 count Large eggs
- 2/3 cup Whole milk
- 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon Table salt
- 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup Pure maple syrup
Equipment
Whisk; Spatula; Skillet; Measuring cups and spoons; Shallow bowl; whisk; spatula; skillet; measuring cups and spoons; shallow bowl
Steps
- Whisk the custard. Whisk the eggs with the cinnamon, vanilla, and salt in a shallow bowl until well combined. Whisk in the milk until the custard is smooth.
- 4 Count egg
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon Table Salt
- 2/3 cup milk
Wash hands and any utensils that contact the raw egg custard.
- Heat the skillet and melt the butter. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Melt 1/2 tablespoon butter and swirl it across the skillet.
- 1 1/2 teaspoons butter
Keep the skillet handle turned inward and use caution around hot butter.
- Dip the bread in the custard. Dip 2 bread slices into the custard, coating both sides for about 5 seconds per side. Let the excess drip away so the bread is soaked but not soggy.
- 2 Count bread
Wash hands and any utensils that contact the raw egg custard.
- Cook both sides until golden. Place the dipped bread in the skillet. Cook until the underside is golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes, then flip and cook the second side for 2 to 3 minutes until golden and the center is set.
- 2 Count bread
Cook the French toast until the egg custard is fully set with no wet egg remaining in the center.
- Repeat with the remaining bread. Repeat the dipping and cooking process with the remaining bread, using 1/2 tablespoon butter per batch. Adjust the heat as needed to keep the butter from burning and achieve even browning.
- 6 Count bread
- 1 1/2 tablespoons butter
Adjust the heat to keep the butter from burning and use caution around the hot skillet.
- Serve with maple syrup. Divide the French toast among plates and serve immediately with 2 tablespoons maple syrup per serving.
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
Notes
Slightly stale bread absorbs the custard well and is less likely to tear. If using very fresh bread, dip it briefly to prevent sogginess.
Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in a lightly buttered skillet over medium-low heat until hot.
