Cook this recipe
- Store-bought white sandwich bread-2 slices
- Mild cheddar cheese-1 ounce
- Unsalted butter-2 teaspoons
- Mini cucumber-1 cucumber
Wash and dry the cucumber. Slice it in half lengthwise, place the halves cut-side down, and slice them crosswise into thin half-moons. Cut the cheddar into thin pieces that will fit within the bread.
An adult should handle the knife.
Keep the cucumber halves cut-side down while slicing for stability.
Spread 1 teaspoon butter over one side of each bread slice.
Heat the skillet over medium-low heat. Place one bread slice butter-side down in the skillet, arrange the cheddar evenly on top, and add the second bread slice butter-side up.
An adult should handle the hot skillet.
Cover and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until the bottom is lightly golden. Flip carefully, cover again, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until the second side is golden and the cheese has melted.
An adult should handle the hot skillet and sandwich flipping.
Transfer the sandwich to the cutting board and let it cool for 1 minute. Cut it in half, then cut each half into 3 short, child-manageable strips.
Let the melted cheese cool briefly and check the temperature before serving.
Serve the 6 grilled cheese strips with all the cucumber half-moons alongside as the only side.
