Prep and season
Knife
Cutting Board
Measuring cups and spoons

Set out a deep 12-inch skillet with lid and shallow containers. Rinse beans and cut broccoli small. Cut chicken into 1-inch pieces on a separate board, season with salt, pepper and garlic powder, then clean hands and tools.

Use a clean cutting board and knife for raw chicken, and wash hands and surfaces after handling it.

1 1/4 pounds chicken breast
1 can black beans
1/2 teaspoon Kosher Salt
1/4 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
4 cups broccoli
2
Brown the chicken
Large skillet with lid

Heat oil over medium-high heat. Cook chicken in uncrowded batches for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally and dividing oil between batches.

Use caution with hot oil to avoid splatter burns.

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 1/4 pounds chicken breast
3
Sauce the chicken
Instant-read thermometer
Large skillet with lid
Measuring cups and spoons

Confirm all chicken reaches 165°F. Return earlier batches, stir in half the barbecue sauce and cook 1 minute. Transfer to a clean plate and cover.

Insert the thermometer into the thickest chicken pieces and confirm they reach 165°F before removing from the skillet.

1/4 cup barbecue sauce
4
Steam the vegetables
Large skillet with lid
Measuring cups and spoons

Add broccoli, corn and measured water. Cover and steam for 4–5 minutes, stirring once, until broccoli is crisp-tender and corn cooked through. Follow full corn-package requirements, extending as needed.

Lift the lid away from your face to avoid steam burns.

4 cups broccoli
1 1/2 cups corn
1/4 cup Water
5
Warm the beans
Large skillet with lid

Stir in the black beans and cook uncovered for 2 to 3 minutes, until everything is hot and lightly seasoned by the pan juices.

1 can black beans
6
Portion the bowls
Microwave
Measuring cups and spoons
4 meal-prep containers

Heat rice by its package directions. Divide rice, vegetables, beans and chicken among shallow containers and drizzle with remaining barbecue sauce. Refrigerate within two hours, or one hour above 90°F. Keep at 40°F or below, use within 4 days and reheat to 165°F.

Open hot rice pouches carefully, directing steam away from your hands and face.

2 Count brown rice
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
