Rinse and drain the black beans, finely dice the onion, and slice the tomato before starting the patties.
Keep fingers clear of the knife blade when slicing the tomato and dicing the onion.
In a mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork until mostly mashed with some texture, then mix in the panko, egg, onion, garlic powder, and salt until the mixture holds together.
Wash hands after handling raw egg.
Divide the mixture into 4 portions and shape into patties about 1/2 inch thick, pressing firmly so they are compact and even.
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering, then add the patties and cook for 4 to 5 minutes on the first side.
Use caution when adding patties to hot oil to avoid splatter.
Flip the patties carefully and cook for 3 to 4 minutes more, or until the patties are fully set, hot throughout, and reach 160°F / 71°C in the center. Top each with cheddar and cover briefly until the cheese is melted and glossy.
Use caution when flipping patties in hot oil.
Because the patties contain egg, cook them until they reach 160°F / 71°C in the center.
Toast the hamburger buns in the skillet until lightly golden, then spread mayonnaise and ketchup on the buns.
Assemble each burger with a cheesy black bean patty and tomato slices, then serve while the patties are hot and the buns are freshly toasted.
